Prepare to tuck in music fans, because the streets and venues from Westgarth to Northcote are set to overflow once again when the Darebin Music Feast returns in October.
Taking in over 150 venues over 11 days of festivities, the newly announced program sees the City of Darebin initiative continue to dig deep into the eclectic world of Melbourne music and the hardworking local artists constantly reinventing it.
The blues and roots flavour of previous years will keep on rolling into 2014, with Melbourne artists Mojo Juju & T Bone, Pugsley Buzzard Big Band and The Wilson Pickers leading a sprawling cohort of artists covering genres including Americana, swamp and hills music. It isn’t all just double basses and steel guitars however, with the diverse program ranging from the world music collective Orkeztra Glasso and the Melbourne Tabla School to rock guitarist Whit (Spiderbait).
Festival hub bar The Bain Marie will return after its popular debut in 2013, bringing free concerts, workshops and activities for music lovers young and old. The pavement will also be bustling with open-air revelry as Street Feast brings three stages for buskers and community performances to the streets.
The pop up venues aren’t restricted to bars however. Keen to expand the scope of the annual festival, this year’s program introduces a new focus on artist development and building industry connections for local musicians. Presented by The Push, one initiative features a pop up industry development space with workshops and speaker panels presented by Music Victoria.
Headlining the festival will be a series of events at the Northcote Town Hall with artists including Charles Jenkins and His Amateur Historians drawing on historical texts, multimedia platforms and orchestral performance to explore the area’s Eastern and European cultural heritage.
Darebin Music Feast runs from October 8 to 19
