Designing 007 – Fifty Years of Bond Style

July 2013

  • Jess Bayly

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise, the Melbourne Museum will take audiences on a multi-sensory journey, through a dozen themed rooms and environments from 1962’s Dr. No to 2012’s Skyfall.

The exhibition will explore the craft behind the screen icons, the secret service and villains, tailoring and costumes, set and production design, automobiles, gadgets and special effects, graphic design and motion graphics, exotic locations, stunts and props.

The objects are unforgettable: Roger Moore’s white tuxedo from Octopussy and the spacesuit from Moonraker; Scaramanga’s golden gun from The Man With The Golden Gun, Jaws’ fearsome teeth which first appeared in The Spy Who Loved Me; gadgets from Q Branch including the attaché case given to Bond in From Russia With Love; and the 1964 silver Aston Martin DB5 from Goldeneye which famously returned to the screen in Skyfall.

The 1969 Aston Martin DBS featured in the film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, starred Australia’s own George Lazenby as Bond.

“There is already great interest in the exhibition – everywhere I go people are asking me about the Bond exhibition,” said Dr Patrick Greene, CEO Museum Victoria. “Even before today’s announcement of tickets going on sale, Bond fans have been booking corporate events, and we know there will be a rush to buy tickets – not least as wonderful Christmas presents!”
