Rolling Stone Exhibition: The Covers 1972 – 2010

April 2013

  • Nina Bertok

The first ever exhibition featuring the best covers from the last four decades of Rolling Stone Australia will be on display now until July 2.

Yarra Ranges Regional Museum will be the final destination of the exhibition tour, showcasing 150 of the greatest covers of the iconic magazine. Rolling Stone is considered as the premiere music and entertainment magazine in the whole of the country, reflecting both our national and the global popular culture with passion, honesty and attitude. The covers themselves have come to define an era not just due to the artists which grace them, but just as much thanks to the amazing design, photography, illustration and typography.

Exhibition curator, Kirsten Fitzpatrick, says Rolling Stone’s influence has come to extend well beyond just music.

“This magazine has been the birthplace of some of the greatest career in photography, journalism, and design. This exhibition chronicles the evolution of our cultural landscape and will trigger nostalgic memories of significant moments in the history of rock’n’roll, and their associate personal memories for all that come to view it.”

Matt Coyte, the Editor-In-Chief of Rolling Stone Australia, says the magazine is about everything that makes music matter.

“From the political to the personal to the profound. With wit, originality and flair, Rolling Stone covers everything that’s important to the leading thinkers among today’s young adults.”

On display will be memorable covers featuring superstars like Madonna, Bob Dylan, Michael Hutchence, Elvis Presley, Steve Martin, Paul Keating, Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Bono and The Beatles, among many others, and the exhibition also features stunning photography and illustration by luminaries including Annie Leibovitz and Ralph Steadman.

Rolling Stone: The Covers 1972 – 2010 will show until July 2 at the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum.
