Imagine The Art Of John Lennon

December 2013

  • Jess Bayly

A special exhibition Imagine The Art Of John Lennon is being held at The Grace Hotel in Sydney from December 2 through til December 22 that will showcase the whimsical skteches and handwritten song manuscripts of John Lennon.

Curator Maureen McCarthy says of the exhibition: “John Lennon’s drawings are a whimsical, intimate diary of his life, many are humorous and some are deeply moving”.

Lennon was a wide spread speaker for a generation. His music  still lives on and inspires all ages. Although rebellious and never afraid to let his voice be heard, Lennon seemed to hold a certain magic that would make people stop and listen; whether they held the same beliefs or not. Few know that Lennon’s first passion was his artwork, and that it was for this that he most wished to achieve recognition.

Before his tragic and senseless murder in 1980, Lennon expressed hope to his wife [Yoko Ono] that he will be recognised as a visual artist. Unfortunately his life was cut short in front of the Dakota apartment building in NYC by Mark David Chapman, a schizophrenic fan who had been stalking Lennon for at least three months before the shooting. Chapman was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to second degree murder.

Yoko Ono began producing a series of Lennon’s original drawing prints in 1986 in what she calls “a slient promise to share John’s love for art with the rest of the world”.

The handwritten manuscripts to twenty of Lennon’s most famous and enduring songs including Imagine, Happy Christmas, Working Class Hero and In My Life are part of the exhibition with more than 70 works on show and many of them for sale.

Imagine The Art Of John Lennon will open at The Grace Hotel, corner King & York Streets Sydney from 10am – 6pm daily until December 22.
