‘Shine’ Pianist Announces Largest Australian Tour In 20 Years
May 2013
Pianist David Helfgott, the inspiration behind the film ‘Shine’ which starred Geoffrey Rush, has announced a three month tour of Australia.
The tour is the most extensive he has undertaken in 20 years and will see him perform in both capital and regional cities over 23 dates. Alongside his much-loved performance of Rimsky-Korsakov’s ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’, which he played to a Hollywood audience at the Academy Awards in 1997, Helfgott will perform his favourite works by Bach, Beethoven and Liszt.
At 66, Helfgott is still as enthusiastic as ever and embraces his busy calendar.
“David’s playing goes from strength to strength and his energy for touring remains unabated,” says Helfgott’s manager Jeff Weaver.
Helfgott’s ability to engage and connect with all audiences has led to his intense popularity, according to tour manager Andrew McKinnon.
“David’s recitals make a special impact on audiences. They are uplifted by his mastery of the romantic repertoire and inspired by his clearly evident love of the music. He connects with his audience in a unique manner and audiences leave the performance elated by what they have experienced.”
Helfgott returned to Australia after an acclaimed European tour and sold-out performances in Sydney and Melbourne in the last year. He is currently taking time out with his wife on their property in New South Wales prior to performances in South Africa and Europe before beginning his Australian tour.
David Helfgott will perform at Melbourne Recital Centre on October 27.
