St Kilda Festival
January 2013
Australia’s largest free music event, the St Kilda Festival, will once again take place at Port Phillip Bay over a nine day period in early February.
With the recent surprise announcement that jazz/funk/hip hop favourites The Cat Empire will headline the occasion, festival producer Adele Denison says organisers expect attendance numbers to be in the hundreds of thousands in 2013.
“On that main day of the festival – the Sunday – it can range anywhere between 250,000 to 400,000 people. It just depends on the weather, which we are now anxiously awaiting the forecast for. Overall, we’re looking at nine days of amazing entertainment, 150 bands across a huge range of musical genres, it’s all free and there’s something for everyone, really.”
Denison says apart from being a free-for-all event, St Kilda’s rich musical history is another major drawcard for people coming from all over Melbourne and beyond.
“It’s so many things – it’s about St Kilda and its history as a place where people come together to celebrate. Melbourne in the summertime is all about St Kilda and the beach. The festival itself started in the 1980s, so it’s one of Australia’s longest running music festivals too, but back in the day St Kilda was getting a less-than-desirable reputation for sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. The council started the festival as a way for people to see another side of St Kilda, the richness of its arts and culture and its local community. Melbourne adopted it very quickly so it remains as a nod to that history of celebrating our cultural life.”
Denison says headlining act, The Cat Empire, are perfect examples of the distinct Melbournian flavour that has taken the world by storm.
“We are delighted to reveal The Cat Empire is joining the cream of Australian music on Festival Sunday. I encourage everyone to come down – you might just discover your new favourite band.”
Other artists to feature at this year’s festival include While The City Sleeps, Peter Combe & The Quirky Berserkey Newspaper Mama Band, Oh Mercy, Pez, Ash Grunwald, Bluejuice and the Midnight Juggernaut DJs.
The St Kilda Festival runs from February 2 to 10. The Festival is produced and presented by the City of Port Phillip and supported by the Victorian Government through Arts Victoria.
