The Dying Beach is the third in a series of crime novels centred on feisty protagonist Jayne Keeney, an accidental expatriate Private Investigator based in Bangkok. This time, the story is set in the exotic location of Krabi on the South Eastern coast of Thailand, where Keeney and her personal and business partner Rajiv are enjoying a relaxing getaway. That is, until they discover that their memorable young tour guide Pla has been found floating in Princess Cave. The police have dismissed the case as an accidental drowning, but given her known swimming ability, and the suspicious justification for the marks on her neck, strangulation and a deliberate cover-up by local authorities is a high possibility.
The revelation that Pla is without close family leaves them feeling responsible for investigating the circumstances surrounding her death, but when they find her housemate Suthita brutally murdered the day after they take possession of Pla’s belongings, Keeney and her partner get a sense of what they are up against. Pla’s notebook containing the handwritten note: “Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money” appears to hold the key, but as they are drawn further into a dangerous web of corruption, the question remains whether they will solve the puzzle before the desperate perpetrator gets his hands on it.
With all the twists and turns of a ‘whodunit’ detective fiction, this enthralling narrative, offering a unique insight into Thai culture, language and issues faced by local villagers, is as informative as it is gripping.
