Akira: Secrets of the Craft

November 2012

  • Jess Lerida

It’s not every day fashion students and those with an interest in the business of the fashion industry have such an opportunity, but here it is. Outstanding Australian designer Akira Isogawa will make a guest appearance at Runway Production School’s short course Introduction to Runway Production on November 23.

One of Australia’s most celebrated and stylistically individual designers, Akira has achieved local and international recognition for his exquisite contemporary creations. We are accustomed to Akira’s Spring/Summer and Winter/Autumn showcase each year, while at the same time he continues to show in Paris to enthusiastic international buyers through both the regular fashion show circuit and private showings.

There’s no doubting his leading role within the Australian fashion industry and just as importantly, his emphasis on the value and importance of craftsmanship – the road to success is not marked with shortcuts, but by intelligence, the ability to do the hard yards, and a pervading subtlety. “I see craftsmanship as an implement with which to realise one’s vision. Past, present and future; that slogan continues in almost everything around which my work evolves,” he says. “Timeless beauty and femininity in my design is profound, in a way for the wearer to express their inner soul.”

Over recent years Akira has been named Designer of the Year and Womenswear Designer of the Year at the Australian Fashion Industry Awards; he has received the Australian Fashion Laureate Award, and joined an illustrious line of sportsmen and scientists by being honoured by Australia Post with his image appearing on an ‘Australian Legend’ commemorative postage stamp.

Akira will offer students insights into his perspective and process as a fashion designer. Discussions surrounding runway show production and execution along with a Q & A session will provide a great opportunity to understand the way designers approach the multiple complexities of their work.

The short course is moderated by Daniel Pizzato who recently returned from five seasons in London as the Production Manager for London Fashion Week. Students will also hear from a range of speakers engaged in the Australian Fashion Industry on runway show production – areas covered will include Styling, Producing, Hair & Make-Up, Directing, Media, Model Casting and Backstage Management.

Additional key note speakers include: Graeme Lewsey, CEO of L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival; Mark Thompson, Artistic Events Manager for Redken; Emily Ward, Hart and Co. Stylist; and Brooke Shell, Senior Account Director from AMPR.

Runway Production School is a new initiative by Fashion and Special Event Company, Event Gallery. The short course is supported by the Fashion and Textile Hub and L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival. Runway Production School’s short course Introduction to Runway Production is held from November 23 to 25 at the Textile & Fashion Hub, Richmond, Victoria.
